What is the potential for prefabricated buildings to decrease costs and contribute to meeting EU environmental targets?

The European Union (EU-27) targets buildings' decarbonization by 2050, and prefabrication presents an opportunity to reduce buildings construction sector impacts. A stock-based approach was developed measure the influence of wide adoption building in EU-27 stock from 2020 2050. Impacts costs five typologies using conventional or prefabricated systems were assessed for three cities – Lisbon, Berlin, Stockholm insulation levels. Results calculated at country levels then combined level. Global warming (GW) varies between 5kgCO2eq/m2 light steel framing (prefab_LSF) medium- a high-rise France 85kgCO2eq/m2 concrete single-family (SF) Poland. Life cycle vary around 900€/m2 multi-family LSF Bulgaria over 11 000€/m2 SF Luxembourg. Prefabrication can further decrease burdens up 6% 10%. model has proven be fast reliable tool forecast market dynamics when introducing technological innovation, such as prefabrication. contribute achieving costs, increasing sector's productivity sustainability.
